Kat teaches yoga with sensitivity and insight. Her classes are playful and purposeful, inviting a healthy amount of curiosity and challenge without heaviness. She believes yoga is the cultivation of the still point between effort and surrender and an attitude that arises organically from consistent practice that helps us to embrace life fully.
Her own yoga journey began as a way of dealing with the challenges of modern day life with a little more grace and humility. What started as a part-time curiosity developed into the sweetest adventure as it began to make her hungry for something that called from elsewhere. Kat circled the globe, indulging her love of travel and seeking out new experiences and esteemed teachers, predominately from the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition, that would later inform the teacher she would become. With almost 2000 hours of teaching and training Kat is now recognised as an ‘Experience Registered Yoga Teacher’ with the Yoga Alliance. Kat teaches a deep and dynamic, soulful vinyasa and restorative/yin yoga. She provides students with a safe, nourishing space to explore yoga by focusing on building strength and stability to support flexibility. She offers plenty of personal attention, adjustments and direction on alignment to make asana practice available to you in a way that is un-intimidating. Kat lives in Amsterdam when she’s not teaching retreats in Portugal, Italy and Spain. Find out more about Kat: http://katherinesmithyoga.com |
A few of my favourite things {above}
My passport… because it tells a story that could rival the most dramatic novel, documenting my life in stamps and visas from the moment I decided to uproot and lose myself in the furthest reaches of Tibet to discovering a different way of life in rural Portugal, running a yoga retreat. Amsterdam luggage label… because I moved to Amsterdam on something of a whim, for love. I lived a very nomadic lifestyle for years without any permanent place to call home, so I tore this off my backpack on the very first day I arrived here - I had a feeling that was about to change. Bringing Yoga to Life by Donna Fahri… because Svadhyaya or self-study is an essential part of an on-going yoga journey. |
Coffee… because I can’t live without it. It’s my favourite vice! It reminds me to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. I get up early to practice and making a good cup is an essential part of my morning ritual. After all, in the words of Pattabhi Jois, ‘No coffee, no prana.’
My journal… because as a yogi and a writer my head is always overflowing with ideas - I’m always scribbling something. Princess Unikitty… because she reminds me to always stay positive. Vintage Italian shoes… just because. |
AYURVEDA WITH KATHERINE
On The Mat
I first learned about Ayurveda when I was living in India. It has given me insight and understanding into my students as individuals that allows me to adapt my teaching according to their needs using the Doshas and elements as a framework for a tailored yoga practice.
In The Kitchen
How we feed ourselves has an enormous impact on our wellbeing. I have a great passion for food and eating well, for pleasure and for health. As the author of my own cookbook ‘Nourish’ I am invested in inspiring and educating people about how food can be used as therapy. I can show you how small changes to your diet can add up to make a big difference.
In Daily Life
How we are in our daily life has great consequences. Even if we can have the best of intentions, sometimes we’re just not sure what it is that we need to function optimally. Beyond our yoga practice and what we put on our plate, embracing new habits and modify old ones, in a way that is appropriate for us an individuals, can be nothing short of revolutionary. I can help you make introduce little lifestyle modifications that are realistic and achievable which add up to happier, healthier, more grounded you.
